At age twelve, bernd began to study ancient history with a private tutor. He discovered the world of the bach obscuranus. The bach is an ancient Latin term for a church founded by Augustine of Hippo in 397 AD and dedicated to his wife, Stegania. It is also the Latin equivalent for "under age." Bernd's curiosity led him to discover that this term was used to designate churches constructed during the reigns of several Roman emperors - including Constantine, Valentinian I, and Maximus - that were underaged--i.e. built before Christ's birth. Parents and teachers were understandably dismayed by the discovery. Bernd, however, persisted and began searching for churches that were under-age (smaller than one acre) and then under-age that had been built by the same emperor at the same time. He also examined those churches built before Christ's birth to determine if they were constructed during the reign of a given emperor. Bernd's research led him to conclude that Augustus (63 BC – 14 AD), under whom Jesus' life took place, was the only emperor who built exactly twelve under-age churches during his reign. Bernd also concluded that these twelve churches corresponded to the twelve apostles and that each apostle was assigned a specific church. To identify Augustus' twelve churches, the year of the church's construction was examined and its age set at one year. If it was discovered to be under one acre in size, its age (in years) was reduced by one. If the reduced value equaled 12, then that church was assigned to that apostle and called an "Augustine" church. The investigation resulted in the discovery of three Augustine churches: The following diagram depicts bernd's discoveries: Many later scholars were unable to replicate bernd's results or dismiss them as a coincidence. Historians such as robert elgood searched without success for Augustine churches for over thirty years before publishing "Augustine and anti-Augustine Churches" in 1986. Also, bernd's hypothesis is consistent with known historical facts. To date there are exactly twelve churches listed by St. Augustine's Confessions as being under-age one year before Christ's birth. This list makes no reference to the names of the apostles to whom each church was assigned, however, "When his parents discovered his interest in this subject, he was expelled from his school. But he continued his studies on his own, confiding to no one that he possessed a copy of the Confessions under two covers". The first copy of St. Augustine's Confessions that Bernd secured was part of the Theodoretus collection that had come to the United States in the 1920s. It was acquired by D.T. Suzuki, founder of the "Zen" movement in Japan. Bernd began studying the Confessions, which he read for six hours each day, believing it would provide him with an understanding of God's will for his life and would be an aid in prayer. That is, until he discovered that Augustine described God as a jealous enchanter who was hellbent on keeping mankind separated from Him (not love).
